All persons who walk must have a ticket. One ticket is included with All-In-One registration for our 2012 Utah Preservation Conference. Tickets are in the form of our tour brochure, with which you may enter each home on the tour. We do not mail the brochures prior to the event, and all advance and day-of ticket purchasers must pick up their tour brochure(s) at our tour headquarters before going on the tour. The tour is an all-weather, rain-or-shine event and there are no refunds for unused tickets.
For the first time this year, we will offer a ticket package for both the May 5 South Temple Historic Tour and also the June 16 Salt Lake Modern Tour of St. Mary's. A part of Utah Heritage Foundation, Salt Lake Modern is dedicated to preserving and promoting the region's mid-century modern architecture and design. Separately, tickets for each event cost $15; by them together for $25, $5 less. You can buy your tickets now and we will put your name on the list for both tours.
Tour attendees will be provided shoe covers to be worn inside all homes; attendees may also visit the homes in socks, but not barefoot. While some buildings are businesses, all are only available to tour during the time and day of our tour. We will not reveal the names of the building owners, nor we will reveal the addresses of homes prior to the tour. Photography is permitted only outside the homes and is prohibited inside. The tour will take approximately one hour to visit all buildings and can be taken on foot, bike, or other transportation. Attendees are not required to visit all the buildings, and may go to each one at their leisure during open hours.
Tour headquarters will be located on May 5 on the lawn of the Utah Arts Council building on 617 East South Temple Street, also known as the historic Glendinning Mansion or Alice Merrill Horne Gallery. The building itself will be closed and is not on the tour.
There is no parking lot available for this tour. Those attending the tour should consider parking on intersecting north-south streets, in legal parking areas. We also encourage biking on the tour, as well as use of public transportation; visit the UTA website for information about the many bus routes near the tour area.
Our annual Historic Homes Tour is typically the largest event Utah Heritage Foundation alone organizes. We regularly sell one thousand tickets to the tour, requiring more than two hundred volunteers the day of to guide people through the beautiful examples of Utah's historic architecture. All Homes Tour volunteers receive one complimentary admission to the tour. We welcome people of varying backgrounds, ages, and skills to volunteer for the tour. While we are happy to have volunteers before the event, we are now specifically looking for two types of volunteers, with two types of commitment:
Homes Tour chairs organize the volunteer efforts at each home on the tour. These men and women work with the homeowner to ensure that the home is respectable for the tour and respected by the tourists. They assist in researching the home's history and help prepare the script for the docents to use during the tour. They recruit and organize shifts for the volunteer docents at each home. Chairs are typically required to devote 20 hours to preparing for the tour, and are expected to stay at the home before, during, and after the tour. While typically one individual chairs the efforts at one home, two people have and can co-chair a home.
Homes Tour docents work a roughly two hour shift in one area of the home designated by the chair. The exact length of the shift depends on the number of docents working in a home. Docents will receive a script, which they are expected to memorize and bring to the tour. Docents also ensure that the property is respected and returned to the owner in the condition it was entrusted to us.
Other volunteer opportunities include:
- Preparing tour booklets for sale;
- Setting up signage and the tour headquarters in the morning;
- Selling tickets at tour headquarters through the day;
- Closing homes, cleaning up signage and the tour headquarters at the end of the day;
- Various other activities as weather, traffic and other needs arise.
